TCU beats SMU in Chicago alumni chapter bowling challenge

When it comes to bowling, everyone knows that TCU Horned Frogs have the SMU Mustangs beat. (Pasadena anyone?)

But we Frogs are also superior at the bowling alley, too.

Last week, 15 TCU alums from the Windy City knocked down more pins than 15 SMU grads in an Iron Skillet Bowling Competition between the two Chicago-area alumni chapters. Note that the Frogs are victoriously hoisting a replica of the Iron Skillet they made especially for the event. (Pretty impressive to create a trophy, put on the line in competition and win it anyway!)

Alumnae wins Outstanding Small Business of the Year Award

Jenny Conrad '99, (right) owner of custom gift basket company Conrad Creative, won the Outstanding Small Business of the Year Award from the Mansfield Area Chamber of Commerce at the organization’s annual awards banquet in January. Accepting the award with Conrad was Carrie Ingram (left).

“We were honored to receive this award,” Conrad shared with us. “The Mansfield community has truly embraced our business and helped us to grow over the years. We are extremely appreciative.”

The award recognizes a business with fewer than 50 employees that has enhanced Mansfield's economy, exhibits model customer service and provides innovative leadership to employees and clients.

Conrad founded the company in November 2006 and has seen a 50 percent jump in sales and customers. The company introduced a line of baskets geared for breast surgery patients in 2011.

This is Conrad's second award from the Mansfield chamber. In 2010, she was recognized for her leadership in the community as Volunteer of the Year and Woman of the Year.

“I think it is important to give back to the community where you live and work,” Conrad wrote. “I push my employees to get involved too. We don’t want to just have a business in Mansfield, we want to be a part of Mansfield."

Conrad Creative specializes in customized gift baskets, corporate gift programs and centerpieces.

TCU bride has surprise in Auburn alum's groom's cake

Meggie (Taylor) Schissler '09 of Auburn, Ala., married John Schissler, who is an Auburn Tiger alum, in July 2011 in Dallas. Her husband insisted on a groom's cake that highlighted the Tigers as the college football national champions.

But Meggie worked with the cake maker to add a Horned Frog twist. "I made sure that my school that finished No. 2 (TCU) did not go unnoticed," she wrote us. "So without him knowing, I dyed the inside of his cake purple. He was surprised and had a good laugh."

Meggie works for the Reformed University Fellowship at the university.

MBA alum pens book of family stories

Peter Hitt (MBA '70) wrote to tell us about his new book Palace in the Fields is now available via the Kindle Bookstore. An engineer-turned-small-business-owner, Hitt penned Palace in order to capture some of the stories about his siblings growing up on a farm in southern Maryland in the 1940s and 1950s before they escaped his memory.

His family moved from suburbia to a tobacco farm for 10 years. The farmhouse turned out to be "Dent's Palace," a former colonial plantation manor which his parents restored to an elegant showplace. Farm play, work activities and interaction with the unforgettable characters who were his neighbors has provided a slice of Americana "which probably does not exist anymore."

"This is my first publishing experience although I have some other manuscripts of my other experiences as a young man," he writes. "But some of the material is not in accordance with my image as a father and grandfather, so I am reluctant to publish anything else."

Hitt earned his MBA in 1970 at TCU at night while working full time at General Dynamics as an Aerosystems
Engineer. Later, he worked several years as a cable television general manager and was responsible for the construction and operation the original cable television in Jacksonville, Fla. "When the system sold, I opened a home inspection business and am still at it," he writes.

Alana works as a merchandising analyst for Dell Computers in Round Rock. Her husband Aaron Dvorak '08 is a manager of financial reporting. They have 2 sons, Aidan, 3 and Andrew, 11 months. They live in Pflugerville.

"We have been celebrating college readiness on our campus. Every Monday, the students and staff are encouraged to wear college shirts and promote their schools. Donated yearbooks and a hidden treasure inside

Coit Yancey may not be an alumnus, but he’s been an avid TCU supporter and fan for decades, partly because of his lovely wife Jane Olive Woodbury Yancy ’45, who passed in 2003.

So when Coit saw our request in the Fall 2011 and Winter 2011 issues for donations of TCU yearbooks, he decided that Jane would have happily contributed her four annuals — 1942-1945 — to the magazine office. They are now part of our growing collection of Horned Frog yearbooks, which are used frequently for content in the magazine.

Inside one of the volumes were the items shown above and below: A program of the Graduating Exercises from 1945, a program from the July 1, 1945 worship services at First Methodist Church in Fort Worth and two copies of invitations to the Commencement Exercises held at “eight o’clock at the Honeysuckle Arbor,” — one of which has a deep purple cover made from thin, supple leather.

The 64 graduates that year earned either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science, some receiving a Bachelor of Science in Education, Physical Education or Commerce.

Deans Colby D. Hall (who also offered the invocation) and Cortell K. Holsapple invested the three who received graduate degrees, including Milton E. Daniel, who earned the “Degree of Doctor of Laws.”

Frogs bust in on Mythbusters

Lauren Gervais '08 and her fiance Derek Matthies '09 attended a "Mythbusters: Behind the Myths" live show in Riverside, Calif., earlier this month and had the chance to teach the TCU Horned Frog hand sign to the show hosts Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage.

Lauren is a registered yoga teacher, fitness instructor and wellness coach and just opened her own studio. (Check out her website — www.reveillelife.com.) Derek is attending Loma Linda for his doctorate in Clinical Psychology. The two plan to be married May 11 in Laguna Beach, Calif.

As the head coach for the men’s and women’s swimming teams at North Carolina State University for 25 years, Don Easterling ’55, MA ‘60 looked for an edge in recruiting. Since his boss was frugal, he devised the low budget approach of sending out holiday greetings with essays that tugged at the heartstrings of athletes and their parents.

A member of the American Swimming Coaches Hall of Fame who coached a dozen Olympians, he compiled the best of his annual letters, all showcasing the true joys of the season in a book titled What Did You Get From Christmas.

Easterling, who now makes his home in Charlottesville, Va., has recently updated the paperback collection of essays for the season and wanted to spread the word to fellow Frogs who may want to add it under their trees.

A horned frog groom's cake

Charlie '06 and Vahista (Bharucha) Ussery '06 were married this year in downtown Fort Worth at the Worthington Hotel and had a special Horned Frog groom's cake. "While I had to make the decor pink (my favorite color), we had to bring in something that represented TCU!" Vahista wrote. "We met when we lived next door to each other on University Drive. Go Frogs!"

Ellen Buck '03 of The Woodlands wrote in to tell us that she and her father made a TCU football poetry book for her 5-year-old son Nathan (above). "This was for his storybook parade at school. In order for them to wear a costume, they had to have a corresponding book. He wanted to be TCU quarterback Casey Pachall (notice the eye black), but there aren't any TCU kids books. Class of 2010 wins Frog Bowl Challenge, sets record

Congrats to the TCU Class of 2010, who won the Frog Bowl Challenge, a fundraising competition among the five most recent classes to graduate. With 278 members contributing, the 2010ers beat out classes from 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. While the Class of 2010 gave $47,750, a record total for a first-year reunion class, the contest is based on highest participation rate. About 15.9 percent of the class contributed. 40 Kappa Delta alumni meet for "60s Sisters Reunion"

Marion Tolbert Coleman '71 of Austin wrote to share about a gathering last month of 40 Kappa Deltas from pledge classes 1964-1969, who spent the weekend of Oct. 7-9 in New Braunfels.

"They called it the '60s Sisters Reunion' and they came from 10 different states. One actually came by car, ferry, bus, plane, and car again (from San Juan Island, Wash.). Forty Kappa Deltas in all spent the weekend at the Prince Solms Inn in New Braunfels, remembering and celebrating 40-plus years of life during and since TCU days.

"Most of us had not seen each other since leaving school. Big sisters reunited with little sisters. Roommates recalled nights of laughter, helping each other climb in and out of chapter room windows after curfew, and trying to hear 'Paul is dead' when playing the White Album backwards. Pledge classes remembered their ties, the most infamous of which was when the 1968 pledge class tied their pledge trainer, Ellen Strickland Wilson '68 to the parking meter in front of radio station KLIF in Dallas. If the DJ had not decided to interview them, chances are they would not have been punished with extra months of dry pledgeship and postponed initiation. Every single one of them said it was their best memory.

"And the ladies still rock. The most surprising (and hysterical moment) was at the Saturday night dinner when our mistresses of ceremonies Darleen Williamson Nixon '70 and Lolly Squires Young '70 asked that the sister (that they knew of) who had gotten a tattoo reveal herself. Needless to say, the room went wild when not only six women stood but they were the from the earliest pledge classes in the group. There was so much laughter and there were tears.

"We have lost a few sisters, some have had tremendous challenges. At least five in attendance were breast cancer survivors. We posted sheets on the hotel front hall that folks could write on. On the one that said, Kappa Delta will always mean to me. Someone wrote, 'A springboard to who I am today' and 'A reminder that all those years ago, KD sisters believed in my worth and they still do' and on the one that read, 'This weekend will... someone said it all. It reminds me of what a gift sisterhood is, one that keeps on giving.'

Coleman hopes the reunion will hopefully inspire other women of our age in other sororities to do the same. Every one of us considers it a small miracle that we actually came together especially since there has not been an active chapter for a long time around which to rally.

Metro Alumni Chapter attended the October Purple Grape Escape, which took the Horned Frogs to two Virginia vineyards in KegBus, which bills itself as D.C.'s "Best Party Bus." Chapter President Shannon Johnson ’02 was delighted they filled the bus and says the event, "Was a blast!"

Alum launches new film based on "Phantom"

"Erik: Portrait of a Living Corpse" — the debut feature film from writer, director, and current Film, Television, Digital Media (FTDM) junior Ryan Bijan — had its world-premiere screening at Fort Worth's Rose Marine Theatre on Friday, October 14, and the response was terrific. It will be screened next at the Rio 6 Cinema in Beeville, Texas, on October 28, as part of the film's recently launched press tour.

"This is by far the most impressive student film I've seen in several years," said Kylo-Patrick Hart, chair of TCU's Department of Film, Television and Digital Media. "If its contents are an accurate indication, Ryan Bijan has the potential to enjoy a very successful and intriguing filmmaking career."

Bijan's film offers a contemporary retelling of Gaston Leroux's "The Phantom of the Opera," one that is told from the Phantom's own perspective. In addition to his screenwriting and directing accomplishments, Bijan plays the role of character Raoul DeChagny and served as the film's editor.

Representing TCU 'til hell freezes, then respresenting 'em on the ice

There's exotic places to dive, and then there is exotic diving.

Earlier this year, Chris Burden '98 of Hemet, Calif., trained to become an ice diver for his job as an investigator with the Riverside County Sheriff Department, including its Underwater Search and Recovery Team. His other duties fall within the department's Professional Standards Bureau.

He posed for this photo in March 2011 at Gull Lake, Calif., where he trained at an altitude of 7,000 feet. "I wonder if ol' Dutch Meyer was referring to this kind of ice?" Burden jokes. The training enabled Burden to become certified as a Level 1 FEMA Dive Team, which allows his squad to be deployed anywhere for public safety related disasters or crime scenes on a national scale.

Alum meets Daryl Washington in Arizona

Deborah Dye '91 of Flagstaff, Ariz., met Daryl Washington '09 earlier this year while the ex-TCU linebacker was in town for Arizona Cardinals training camp. Deborah writes, "He is such an amazing person and athlete (obviously). He spent an hour talking with me and have me tickets to every home game! It has been amazing and almost makes up for not living in Texas. He is just like the athletes I knew when I was at TCU - talented, gracious, grounded and kind!"

Washington is in his second season with the Cardinals, starting at linebacker. He has a career total of 101 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble.

Deborah also made a plea to return to purple and white uniforms. "You can't mess with tradition - even if you win more games. The purple and white are classic and look better on TV. Gary Patterson can still wear all black."

Andy Dalton and JT Hodges

Both are young alums, big fans of TCU and are rising stars in their professions. Earlier this month, they were introduced and posed for this photo flashing the Frog sign.

Andy Dalton '10, starting quarterback of the Cincinnati Bengals, and country music artist JT Hodges '00 met after a Bengals' practice in October. Dalton has guided Cincinnati to a 4-2 start, while connecting on 118 of 189 passes for 1,311 yards and seven touchdowns and five interceptions. While the season is not even half over, the QB is being called Red Rifle by the local media and is emerging as a contender for NFL Rookie of the Year.

Hodges signed to Show Dog-Universal Music last year and opened this summer for the Toby Keith Locked and Loaded Tour. His first single Hunt You Down, released in June, is currently ranked 40th on the Billboard Country chart. A full-length compact disc will be released later this fall.

Michael O. Browning Jr. '07 of Dallas and his wife are expecting their first child in the spring. Last week, they got a 3-D sonogram of the expected Baby Landree, and she appeared to be "throwing up the TCU Horned Frog sign," he wrote to tell us. The Brownings, who are big TCU football fans, love the image so much that they are getting t-shirts made for their tailgate! Michael is a senior vice president for marketing and business development at Santa Barbara Medical Innovations in Dallas.

A resident of Houston, Jean and her husband have been on six African safaris to South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Tanzania. Jean said she and her husband love tenting and driving around to see the African animals and colorful birds. "Safaris are almost as thrilling as being in

Mary Shull Lawrence '80 of League City, Texas, and husband Jack just returned from a fabulous vacation in Oahu, Hawaii, to celebrate their 30th anniversary. "It was also a great escape from Houston heat and humidity!" Mary writes. "I managed to wear something TCU-related at least once every day while on vacation. I even did the "Go Frogs" while parasailing."

Not one day went by where someone didn't stop me to ask about TCU, Mary said. "It was a great opportunity to talk to folks about TCU," she said. "We even met another TCU alum the first day we arrived, appropriately attired in a TCU shirt as well."

Mary is works for METRO (Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County) as lead analyst for Ridership Analysis and Service Evaluation.

New Frogs meet U.S. Senators McCain, Kerry

Well, you never know who you'll meet on the streets of Rome. In late June and early July, incoming TCU Honors students explored the cultural, historical and social contributions of Italy's capital city as a part of Frog Camp Rome. The city, whose history spans two and a half millenia, provided many wondrous sites and opportunities over seven days: the Vatican, St. Peter's Basilica, the Coliseum, the Catacombs, the Borghese Gardens and Trevi Fountain.

But one late-night hunt for gelato provided more than Frog Campers expected, says the trip's faculty sponsor Ron Pitcock, the J. Vaughan and Evelyn H. Wilson Honors Fellow. "As we ate gelato outside one of my favorite shops at 11:30 p.m., we noticed two familiar faces strolling up Via Uffici del Vicario — U.S. Senators John Kerry and John McCain," he writes. "They were both gracious with their time. Both men posed patiently for pictures and chatted extensively with TCU’s incoming students."

What are the odds of meeting two U.S. senators on the streets of Rome, one student wondered. Says Pitcock, "Another student replied, 'It’s more significant than that. How many people can say they took a picture with the last two people to lose the U.S. Presidency?!' ”

TCU pride atop Grand Teton

Chris Poland '98 and Kirk Elam '98 scaled to the top of Grand Teton in the Grand Teton National Park in Jackson, Wyo., on July 26, 2011 at 8:40 a.m. "We brought a TCU flag up to the top to show our school pride," Poland writes.

The Grand Teton is 13,779 feet above sea level, and the duo climbed almost 8,000 vertical feet in two days. "It definitely was the most difficult thing that I have ever done," Poland says. "The view was spectacular, and the trip was personally fulfilling."

50 years later, still feeling forever Jung

It's been 50 years since David Roomy '61 left TCU. It's also been five decades since Swiss psychiatrist and thinker Carl Jung died.

Both have significant meaning to Roomy, a retired psychiatrist and professor living in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with wife Cynthia Macnider Roomy '61. David has penned a tome of poems and musings called Spirit and Flesh, Englishman and Greek (iUniverse) about what Jung's "union of opposites" has meant in his life and practice. June is recognized as the founder of analytical psychology, a pioneer in dream study and among the first to view the human psyche as "by nature religious."

The book spans the last 50 years, exploring "what these opposites of spirit and flesh could mean for others but without reference to theory—only depending on art and beauty of phrase," David writes.

"Individual lives are important," he continues. "Often they tell the story of developments taking place on the collective level. The opposites are rendered here, for literary purposes, in the images of English-like and Greek-like parts in ourselves."

David transferred to TCU from Bethany College after a year of travel and speaking as the 1958-59 president of the International Christian Youth Fellowship Commission. Later, he took writing courses at the Poetry Society of America and Columbia University and has been a Penguin/Arkana author. He has traveled to Greece many times and lived for seven years with his family in England.

The 90-second movie, shown below, chronicles his life since leaving TCU, he says. The couple has found memories of TCU, although they regret missing their 50th reunion.

With a love for creative and unique designs, Christina Greene ’10 has always enjoyed turning her ideas into reality. As a young girl, she played dress-up with her mother's jewelry and made her own friendship bracelets. During high school, her passion for jewelry making grew during an art class dedicated to jewelry.

This spring, she launched Christina Greene, a collection of handmade, one-of-a-kind jewelry created from semi-precious stones and gold-tone findings. The collection includes a Vintage Design line, a Belizean Sea Collection, inspired by a recent trip to Belize, and a new College Collection, with TCU-related items like the purple agate cuff shown above.

Christina’s recent acceptance into Parsons: The New School of Design on Fifth Ave., in New York City will allow her to add a fashion marketing degree to her resume.

Her collection is now available online, or at Haut Chocolat, a Houston boutique. Her goal is to have the line in boutiques and department stores nationwide.

Horned Frog cupcake anyone?

Kate Jones '09 of Fort Worth has been baking and decorating cupcakes since high school. She even continued her culinary pastime as a Horned Frog.

"I would generally surprise friends with cupcakes for birthdays or special occasions," she says.

But on her own 23rd birthday, Jones received a cupcake kit with holders shaped like turtles and teddy bears from her best friend Mallorie Sayre '10.

"I thought why not create a horned frog?" Jones wondered.

But not just a horned frog on a cupcake. Rather, Jones thought she could make an entire horned frog-shaped cake made out of cupcakes.

Her first one was for Mary-Kathleen Baldwin '03, assistant director for the TCU Center for Community Involvement & Service-Learning.

"She absolutely adored it, and I posted the photos to my Facebook account." Jones said. "In no time, friends were asking if I would bake one for them and offering ideas of how to market the product."

Now, Jones is starting her own business - CupKate's Bakery. She used some freeware on the Web to create her own site and is trying to get noticed.

" I really think growth is possible especially once the word gets out."

The Horned Frogs may not play in the Rose Bowl Game any time soon, but Purple Nation can still make its presence felt. Proud alumna of the Harris College of Nursing Christine Schroeder ‘85 wrote to tell us about something coming in a future Tournament of Roses Parade.

"I recently discovered at a nursing convention that for the first time on Jan 1, 2013, the president of the Tournament of Roses will be a nurse. Her presidency is recognizing the contributions that nurses make in all our lives by dedicating a Nurses Float.

Bronze frog

Each summer the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum hosts the Prix de West Invitational Art Sale & Exhibit. This year, the 108 Western artists included Gerald Balciar, who brought “Sunny Spot.”

It’s 7-inches tall, 11 ¼-inches wide and 5-inches deep, and costs $950. The show closes Aug. 7, so don’t wait too long to contact the Museum store at 405.478.2250, ext. 229.

Frogs on the run

Trudy Baade and her husband, Mathew, both class of ’01, recently ran their third race together with fellow classmate Mark Gregory in Boulder, Colo.

The Baades, who live in Grapevine, ran a couple of the White Rock half marathons with Gregory, but for this latest effort, they traveled close to his home in Denver to run the Bolder Boulder, one of the largest races in the world with more than 50,000 participants.

“The Bolder Boulder was the third big race we ran together,” Trudy writes. “ So I guess you can say we have all been running since college.”

Gregory is with the Gregory Group of Merrill Lynch in Denver. He is also the past Denver Alumni Chapter President and currently serves on the National Alumni Board.

Matthew is a partner/vice-president with Consilium Staffing, LLC in Valley View, Texas. Trudy is a Certified Master Wedding Planner and owner of Lagniappe Weddings with my twin sister and TCU grad, Sarah Tooke Pittman in the DFW area.

Austin cyclists

Valerie Neal '71 gets space shuttle Discovery

NASA announced today - on the 30th anniversary of the first space shuttle launch - that it has selected the resting places of four retired spacecraft, and a Horned Frog is getting one.

The shuttle Discovery, which completed its last mission in March, will become the property of the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, a wing of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Virginia, which is curated by TCU's own Valerie Neal '71.

The Udvar-Hazy Center currently holds the shuttle Enterprise, which was the first shuttle and never made it into orbit, yet has immense historical value. The TCU Magazine wrote about Neal, who has worked for NASA and has been at the museum as a curator since 1989. She is responsible for post-Apollo human spaceflight artifact collections.

John Morris '11 didn’t know what to say when his girlfriend, Nikki Garber ’08 (MS ’10) asked during the holiday break whether they might get married at some point.

“I felt so bad because I think I broke her heart,” Morris would say later. “But I had this whole thing already planned and didn’t want to ruin the surprise, so I told her it would be a few years.”

This “whole thing” was an unexpected marriage proposal at the Rose Bowl, which he announced by having the cheerleaders hoist signs saying "Nikki Will You Marry Me?"

Garber’s reaction?

“She started looking around and said, ‘Isn’t that nice, somebody else spells their name the same way I do,’ “ Morris recalls. “Then she turned toward me, and by then I was on my knee holding up the ring.”

Yes, she said yes.

“People around us freaked out,” Morris says. “There wasn’t a dry eye in the bunch, even the people who didn’t know who we were.”

Ironically, the couple that sat in front of them at the game also got engaged at a TCU football game about 30 years ago.

Morris and Garber met about a year ago through a mutual friend, and their first date was at the Fiesta Bowl, so Morris decided a proposal at the Rose Bowl was particularly fitting.

He asked her family for permission, arranged for the cheerleaders to hold up the signs and bought an engagement ring — crafted, appropriately, from rose gold, a pink-hued gold that has recently come in vogue.

The matching wedding band will circle her finger at Robert Carr Chapel next November, when they will marry.

Morris, a Fort Worth boot maker, will finished his bachelor’s degree at TCU in May, then move to Houston, where Garber is a geologist for Plains Exploration and Production, and hopes to being an MBA program at Rice University in the fall.

"In 1979, I entered my freshman year of college at Auburn University. In 1981, after meeting the man who would one day become my Auburn engineer husband, I made a tough decision to leave Auburn for TCU. My brother is an Auburn alum. My older sister is an Auburn alum. My younger sister is a TCU alum. My mother was a TCU journalism department employee.

Never, in a million years, would I have expected to see an Associated Press final football rankings poll listing Auburn as No. 1 and TCU as No. 2.

I love both of my schools. War Eagle and Go Frogs!"

Horned Frog snow sculpture

Le’Ann Pembroke Callihan ‘90 of Denton wrote to share these snow photos with The TCU Magazine.

Her husband Mark (pictured above) created the snow sculpture on Monday with sons Reece, 12, and River, 8, all of whom are big Horned Frog fans.

While the skin looks like stone, the giant horned lizard is all snow and took several hours to sculpt. The Callihans used water colors to decorate the jersey, face and skin.

Susan R. Haecker Morgan '83, Craig A. Morgan '81 and daughter Lindsay Taylor Morgan '09 (along with son Craig F. Morgan, a University of Texas student) celebrated TCU's Rose Bowl victory while on vacation in the British Virgin Islands.

Susan, a tax professional in Arlington, writes: "We vacationed over New Year's, sailing on a 46-foot catamaran from Tortola and proudly flying our TCU flag. During our sail, several other boats flashed us a Horned Frog hand sign or called out to us during the week. We made special arrangements to watch the bowl game at the marina on New Year's Day and drew lots of attention as we proudly cheered the Frogs on!! It was the next best thing to being in Pasadena!"

Watching the Frogs from remote Peru

"I was in Iquitos, Peru, for my brother’s wedding on January 1. Iquitos is a remote city in the Amazon Rainforest, that lacks many of the amenities we are used to, such as air conditioning and clean water. So imagine my surprise that when I went to the beauty salon with my sister-in-law getting to our hair and nails done, the Rose Bowl was on the TV! I got to watch the second quarter of the game before we had to head to the church.

It’s unfortunate that I’m wearing red (the color of the bridesmaid dress), but I still thought you’d love it!"

Signed Forever Purple

Here's a response we got from a reader from Chicago:

My mother was a UNT grad. My sister was a UNT grad. It was simply assumed I would follow in their footsteps. My dad had a junior high education. All he wanted was for me to do better than he had done.

In 1970, I became a TCU freshman. My mother and sister felt certain I had been brainwashed. My dad rolled his eyes a lot. There was no brainwashing involved. I simply wanted to be a TCU Horned Frog.

For four years I participated in every activity TCU had to offer. I made good grades. I was president of my sorority. I was Miss TCU. And all of that was great, but what I really wanted was to have a football team I could be proud of and brag about to my friends.

For 4 years, I never experienced a winning football season. Sure, we’d occasionally beat Baylor or Rice or maybe SMU. Arkansas “woo pig soooee’ed us” year after year. Texas stampeded us like Bevo on steroids. And those Aggies, well we got “gigged” on a regular basis.

I graduated. I got married. I moved to seven states. I got divorced. I moved three more times. I knew Bekins, United Van Lines and Atlas Movers like I should have known my neighbors. But through it all, one thing stayed constant: I remained a proud TCU Horned Frog.

Over the years, I explained (and tried to describe) a Horned Frog from Boston to Princeton (yes, THAT Princeton). From Sacramento to Chicago (twice) and then on to Nashville. Some got it and some didn’t. It is a toad? A lizard? A frog? Do you get warts when you touch it?

Through it all, I wished for a TCU football team that would make me proud. And I waited. And I waited. And I waited. For years, I waited.

Then Gary Patterson entered the scene as Head Coach. Gary who? Never head of him. Where’s the flash? Where’s the splash? Still waiting. And I’m not getting any younger.

Fast forward to January 1, 2011. 2011 is the year I’ll turn 60! And finally, I have the answers I’ve been seeking. Splash and flash? Don’t need it. Is it a frog or a lizard? If you have to ask, you’ll never understand it any way.

What we have is a coach who knows how to take good players and teach/allow them to be great. What we have is a coach who understands the concept of “team,” and players who respond to that way of thinking.

What we have is a coach who really doesn’t even look like a coach. He hikes up his pants and re-ties his shoes so often I get whiplash watching the contortions.

What we have is a lack of drama, trauma and whining and lots of positive results.

Thank you Coach Patterson and the TCU Horned Frog Football Team for finally giving me what I’ve wanted for so many years. Cheers to you, 2011 Rose Bowl Champions! And cheers to the fact that I’ll never have to “explain” a Horned Frog again.

TCU Black Alumni Association watches the Frogs

The TCU Black Alumni Association held a watching party at the Arlington Highlands Improv with more than 100 Frogs attending. It was the association's largest event outside of Homecoming 2010. "The spirit of excitement for TCU football was incredible, and everyone had an amazing time," wrote Terrance Maiden '00, president of the association and former football letterman, along with twin brother Tim '00. "As a former football player, the Rose Bowl win will be a moment I treasure for a lifetime. We had a tremendous turnout. The entire restaurant was dedicated to alumni and supporters of TCU."

Football players sign poster for Army alum in Afghanistan

Jessica Cates, associate director of TCU's Alcon Career Center, wrote us to share a heart-warming story about what the team did before it left for California.

"My brother, Clay Eiland, a TCU alum and graduate of the ROTC program (and die-hard Horned Frog fan), is a Captain in the Army and is currently serving at Camp Marmal in Afghanistan. This is his second tour. His wife, also a TCU alum, and 5-week-old daughter are anxious for his return in May (as are the rest of his family!).

A couple weeks ago, Clay’s twin brother, Cliff (a 2nd year TCU MBA student) contacted Jake Kirkpatrick to see if he wouldn’t mind signing a poster to send to Clay. Jake happily agreed and said he would try to get some of the other guys to sign the poster as well. When we got the poster back from Jake, all of the players (from what I can tell) had signed the poster, along with a thank you message to Clay. Jake also gave us a couple of individual signed pictures of himself in case there were other Frog Fans at Camp Marmal. I know this seems so small, but it will provide a much-needed connection to home for Clay. While he was disappointed to miss this year’s Christmas with family, I think he was more bummed about missing the Rose Bowl (don’t tell his wife!).

It could have been so easy for the football team to be focused on themselves, especially leading up to the biggest game of their lives, but it speaks wonders of their character to think of someone so far away. I have never before been so impressed with a group of young men.

Just thought someone should know. Go Frogs!"

Loved the Rose Bowl, but wanted the Riff Ram chant

Lauren Johnston '02 wrote to tell us about her experience in Pasadena and the multitude of Horned Frogs in her clan, plus a plea to hold on to our traditions and roots:

"The Horned Frog victory over Wisconsin was an incredible experience! To see the number of Horned Frogs in the stadium and culmination of generations of graduates was powerful and unexpected. My own family spans three generations, all eager fans who traveled to the Rose Bowl. I had the opportunity to sit next to a TCU alumnus who played football in the 1950s, and his friend played basketball during the same time period. Earlier in the day at the Tournament of Roses parade, I spoke with a player from the 1960s and ran into a player from the late 90s. To have the support of fans spanning over 60 years was moving and exciting.

During the football game, my 70-year-old neighbors stood the entire time, cheering the frogs and high-fiving the fans surrounding them. The one thing that was missing was the infamous Riff Ram cheer. A cheer that spans decades and has the power to pull generations together has been absent all season, and especially during the Rose Bowl. Individuals remarked that they hoped the cheerleaders would lead us in the train moving chant of Riff Ram, but it never occurred. As TCU continues its prestigious journey from small school to big contender, I hope it doesn't forget its past roots. SuperFrog has changed from a paper-mache head to a muscle-and-spike mascot, our campus has grown exponentially and leads the country in innovation, and our cheers have changed and become more modernized. I hope that as we continue to shine on the main stage TCU continues to cheer the one chant that unites all fans regardless of graduation year. Riff Ram Bah Zoo!"

Frogs Win Rose Bowl over Wisconsin!!!

In what has to be the biggest win in TCU Football history, the #3 Frogs beat #4 Wisconsin 21-19 in front of 94,118 fans. Andy Dalton, in his final game as quarterback at TCU, threw for a TD and ran for another on his way to Offensive MVP honors. Tank Carder led a TCU Defense in holding Wisconsin to 19 points when the Badgers had been averaging 43.3 point per game. Great in-game adjustments by Coach Gary Patterson and his staff kept Wisconsin off balance and enabled the Frogs to make key plays late in the game. The senior class ends its career with 44 wins (a school record) and the Frogs end the season 13-0 with an outside chance of a share of the national title should the national championship game between Auburn and Oregon be less than stellar.

Hard to believe, but a great 2010 TCU Football season is over. Perhaps the greatest season ever!

A couple of proud Horned Frogs are shining their light for their team as the boys prepare for the Rose Bowl.

Bryan Koop ’80, senior vice president, regional marketing at the Prudential Center in Boston, Mass., along with his wife Susan ’81, (above) are lighting Boston’s iconic Predential Tower purple tonight to welcome TCU to the Big East and support the Horned Frogs as they take on the Wisconsin Badgers in the 2011 Rose Bowl.

The Prudential Tower is an internationally recognized Boston icon and became infamous for being lit up during the Boston Red Sox’s “Reverse the Curse” World Series in 2004. The Tower has, quickly since then, become the Beacon of Boston and Red Sox Nation.

"Tonight this Beacon will shine on Frog‐Nation and hopefully bring about the same luck," the Koops say.

It Never Rains in Southern California.....Wrong!!!!

Heavy rains moved into LA overnight and had made for a wet Wednesday as the Frogs prepare for Wisconsin and the 2011 Rose Bowl. There's no indoor facility at the Home Depot Center, so the Frogs practiced in the rain today. An early morning press conference featured Co-Offensive Coordinators Jarrett Anderson and Justin Fuente and QB Andy Dalton, WR/KR Jeremy Kerley, Remington Award Winner Jake Kirkpatrick, WR Jimmy Young and OT Marcus Cannon. Immediately after Wisconsin's Defensive stars showed up with nothing but good things to say about the Frogs' offense and the way they play.

Frogs have Spirited practice, "Rudy" Visits the Frogs!

Tuesday meant a full-pads practice for the Frogs as they start to sharpen their preparation for Saturdays 97th Annual Rose Bowl Game. Lots of full-speed hitting was punctuated with several visitors including ESPN's TV crew of Brent Musberger and Kirk Herbstreit (who apparently is a believer in the Frogs!). Also on-board for today's practice was former Miami Head Coach Randy Shannon and Fresno St. Head Coach Pat Hill. The big visitor today was "Rudy"...that's right Rudy Ruettiger, the famous former walk-on at Notre Dame upon whom the movie "RUDY" was based. Rudy addressed the Frogs after practice and told them to make the most of their "moment" in the Rose Bowl. It was a thrill for all the Frogs to meet him and especially for your reporter, who's a big fan of the movie.

Although I've been there before for Super Bowl XXVII, college football games and even been on the field with ABC's Keith Jackson, let me tell you there was something extra special this day about coming over the hill into the Arroyo Seco and seeing that stadium in a different light....a PURPLE light.

Frogs land in LA for Rose Bowl Prep

Friday morning the TCU Horned Frogs and their travel party arrived at LAX to start the week-long run up to the 2011 Rose Bowl. We landed at 10:30 a.m. PST. Sunny, clear skies met the Frogs, along with an escort by the California Highway Patrol (CHIPS for those old enough to remember the hit NBC TV show from the 1970's) to the Frogs' hotel. I'm off to the Rose Bowl this afternoon to get a look at the stadium and find my way around Pasadena. And, oh, by the way -- speaking of CHIPS - I couldn't help myself - had to get a photo with em! Those standing around were encouraging the officers to take me in!!

Jay Leno tied up for TCU

Lynn Miller ’03 (MSN ’10) and her husband Matt are currently in California during her Nurse Anesthesia clinical rotation and decided to attend a live taping of "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

By making an online reservation, they received free tickets to the show – but that is only the beginning. Next, they had to drive through L.A. traffic to arrive four hours early, lining up behind sixty other people who arrived slightly earlier. After sitting, eating and chatting their time away, the group was escorted into the studio.

Although free ticket holders don’t get to choose their seats, Lynn and Matt made it in the first row of grandstand seating near the stage for the guest musician of the night. The show was full of laughs, the guests were interesting and the music was a surprisingly good live performance.

And yet, the most interesting part of the night happened before the cameras started rolling. Along with several other announcements and warm ups, Jay has a tradition of coming out to greet the audience prior to the show and answering a few questions. It’s said that it loosens him up, and he enjoys hearing from his fans — some of whom have traveled many miles to be there.

The first question of the night was from a school teacher, and Jay cleverly responded with quips and amusing faces that made the group laugh. Next, Lynn’s husband got Jay’s attention and asked the following question, “Jay, since your alma mater Emerson College doesn’t have a football team, would you consider rooting for TCU’s Horned Frogs this season?”

Without a pause, Jay enthusiastically said, “Sure”! They sat down satisfied and awaited the start of the show.

Ten minutes later, he came out to deliver his monologue, and what did Lynn see, but Jay was wearing a purple tie!

She leaned forward and asked the staffer whether this was a color he normally wore. He said, “Frankly, no. He’s more of a straight red or blue guy. Purple is a little unusual.”

So, fellow Horned Frogs, not a coincidence!

We hope everyone (Jay Leno included) keep rooting our Frogs on to a BCS Championship this year!

Carmen Castro '05 gets unexpected hello from new Frog friend

“Randomness!” wrote Carmen Castro ’05. “What a small world!”
Castro was referring to the letter above, which she found on her windshield last summer in Washington, D.C.

“While doing my graduate work at American University, I found this note from a fellow Horned Frog in the most unexpected of places: my car windshield! It was a pleasant surprise considering I was dealing with a big move to NY.

“The note was from Judy Eierdam '89, now living in Greenwich, CT, who just happened to be visiting a friend in the Alexandria, VA. area! She recognized the TCU logo on the back of my car.

  “It made my day and proved to my fellow graduate program colleagues at American University just how close my alum network is at TCU.”

Castro has been back in Fort Worth since late September and is working for Catholic Charities of Fort Worth and serving as a freelancer for the community weekly publication The Informador. She hopes to find work in the broadcast editorial field.

Keeping the tradition going

TCU alumni Dan Michalek '86, Tom Fireoved '85 and Ross Landmen '87 reconnected on Oct. 16, when the three were there for the BYU game, which was during Parent's Weekend.

Two are now purple parents as well: Dan has a freshman, Conner '14; Ross's daughter Madelyn '13 is a sophomore.

Yard painted with giant TCU in Bay Area

Michael Magbuhat of Fremont, Calif., surprised his daughter Nicolette who is a freshman at TCU with this design in his yard. A house painter by trade, Magbuhat laid out the letters to scale in his front yard. Then, he mowed the grass in two different heights - one very low for the TCU letters and a taller length for the white surrounding the letters. Then using environmentally friendly paint, he sprayed the letters and the white border.

Magbuhat writes: "I was at Family Weekend and have followed TCU football for sometime and got all excited when the baseball team went to the College World Series. The experience at a TCU home football game was exhilarating. I thought this would be a surprise for my daughter when she visited home. I was ecstatic the way it came out. GO FROGS!!!!!!!!!"

One day old and wearing Frog gear

On November 5, 2010, Brian '99 and Michelle Bonjour '01 of Phoenix, Ariz., welcomed a new Horned Frog into their family - Camden, who was born at 2:45 p.m. The next day, little Camden was wearing TCU clothing to cheer the Frogs on to victory in the TCU-Utah football game with siblings Kendal and Beckett and grandparents Karen and Tom Bonjour '72.

David Alan Hall ’87 and Jo Anna Grant ’88 have laser focus

Author David Alan Hall ’87 writes that wife Jo Anna Grant ’88 is trying to ensure that The Force will be with the Frogs always with her working, custom made, Star Wars light saber with a blazing purple laser blade.

Grant, who earned her PhD from the University of Oklahoma in 1996, was recently promoted to full professor at Cal State San Bernardino. Hall writes of her recent work: “In the face of critics, she developed with a partner an online public speaking course. It has been a huge success. She is sought after for her expertise in teaching it. Recently she was asked to start offering it to students overseas.”

Hall is now working on his ninth book, a novel about a father who comes to better understand himself through a commitment to better understanding his daughter, who suffers from autism.

His most recent book, Raw Talent: Nurturing the Creative Seed, an autobiography, was the No. 1 bestseller in December and January 2010 on the Kindle in the “Artists Memoir” category. In addition, one of his novels is under consideration at Paramount Pictures for adaptation to the big screen.

In his spare time, Hall makes short, personal videos, including one about his days at TCU and his life in general.

Hall and Grant live in Redlands, Calif., where they just bought their first house. They met at TCU in 1986. “In 2001 I arranged to meet her in the very spot I first saw her in Reed Hall, and surprised her by proposing. We have been married for 7 years,” Hall writes.

Kelsie Johnson ’10 shared her Horned Frog pride — and her extensive collection of TCU shirts — with her class of second graders at the Houston-area school where she is teaching for Teach for America.

Kelsie writes: My classroom theme is the "Fantastic Frogs," allowing me to put all my Frog paraphernalia to good use. Today was College T-shirt Day at my school and my college-bound second graders didn't have T-shirts to wear. Naturally, I put my millions of free TCU shirts to good use and brought all 25 of my students a shirt to wear today.

Kelsie was the TCU student body president last year.

According to the organization’s website, Teach For America's network has grown to over 28,000 individuals. They are one of the nation’s largest providers of teachers for low-income communities, and have been recognized for building a pipeline of leaders committed to educational equity and excellence.

The 2010 corps is made up of more than 4,500 recent college graduates, graduate students, and professionals from all 50 states, over 500 colleges and universities, and a variety of career backgrounds.

This school year, more than 8,200 first- and second-year corps members are working to raise the achievement and change the life trajectories of over 500,000 students in low-income communities.

Smoke signals for Jacob Nussrallah ’07

When 1st Lt. Jacob Nussrallah ’07, a platoon leader with the 118th Military Police Company (Airborne), was in Afghanistan this year for a re-deployment as a mentor and evaluator, he had the Horned Frogs on his mind.

“At the end of the training, I had extra purple smoke and wanted a picture showing my support to Texas Christian University,” he says.

Nussrallah is now an operations officer for the 503rd Military Police Battalion (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, N.C., The smoke was used as simulators for artillery and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

“It is certainly an interesting life choice when you decide to go into the Army and commission as an officer,” Nussrullah says. “I want to thank all the Horned Frogs that sent care packages to me and my troops while we were down range and I look forward to visiting TCU again.”

Adam Marr '06 flying Apaches, cheering the Frogs

U.S. Army Capt. Adam Marr ’06 exchanged emails with us from his deployment in Taji, Iraq, where he is an AH64-D Apache helicopter pilot in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn — and a proud TCU Horned Frog fan. (That’s Marr with his ride and TCU flag.)

An ROTC cadet at TCU, Marr is now an aviation captain with the 1-1 Attack Reconnassaince Battalion, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infintry Division out of Fort Riley Kan.

He took some time to answer some questions with the magazine via email.

What duties do you have in Iraq? Briefly describe your day-to-day service?
I just finished up my time as a Platoon Leader in Alpha Company. I have since moved on to work as the Battalion S4 or Supply and Logistics Officer in addition to my pilot duties. We have currently been deployed to Taji, Iraq, since March 15th. A typical day involves waking up an hour or two prior to our Operations and Intelligence briefing, where I find out what mission I will be supporting that day. Then I grab a quick bite to eat and head down to the flight line to prepare, go through preflight and posture myself for the mission. We then go out and fly a multitude of missions that include (but are not limited to) route reconnasiance, Convoy Security, aerial escort, counter-IED, counter-indirect fire, special ops missions, and humanitarian aid drops. It’s typically about six hours in the sky. Then we return to Taji and do our post-mission debrief, maintain the aircraft, fill out the logbooks and maintenance trackers. After that, it’s time to eat again at the dinning facility, where the food is pretty good but certainly doesn’t compare to a good ol’ Texas steak.

Obviously, you're a Frog fan. Do you get to follow the team over there? Listen to games? See highlights online?
I attended TCU from 2002-2006 where I participated in ROTC as well as being a Lambda Chi Alpha. I have an enormous amount of school spirit. My favorite pen that is always on my uniform is a plastic TCU pen that I bought at the TCU bookstore last summer, and I use it every day. Ed Adams ’03 is stationed with my unit as well. He was a senior in ROTC when I was a freshman and now flies UH60s (Blackhawks). He currently Commands Alpha Company 3-1,1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division out of Fort Riley Kan. We are both huge Frog fans and talk almost every other day about the Frogs’ recent wins and upcoming opponents, as well as how much we hope Boise State loses each week.

What made you decide to serve your country in the Army?
When I was a senior at Grapevine High School, I applied to one school and one school only — TCU. It was the only place I wanted to go. When I found out about the ROTC Program I couldn’t believe what an amazing opportunity was in front of me. I managed to get school paid for at one of the finest most prestigious private schools, while growing and developing in preparation for my time in the Army. What initially started as a way to fund my education turned into a profound desire and sense of obligation to our Armed Forces. The true reward for me is the soldiers I work with — the sons and daughters of America. Everyday they show me something new and great, that they are capable of anything. I am truly humbled to serve and cannot think of a more rewarding more personally gratifying occupation than helping to protect our families, freedoms and way of life. Flying the Apache isn’t that bad either. Go Frogs!

It's always tailgating time somewhere!

Back in May, Karen Pfeifer Mullins '96 and Stephanie Mills Matthews '00 stole a few minutes for a photo with football coach Gary Patterson, who spoke to a new alumni group called Premier Frogs (30s and 40s). Patterson talked up the team and the surging season ticket sales.

Meanwhile, alumni munched on Frog-themed cookies and sampled food from nearly a dozen high-end vendors. Other guests toured the Meyer-Martin Complex, including its suites, and sampled gourmet morsels from Fort Worth Chefs.

Music was provided by the TCU Steel Drum Band and Trey and the Tritones.

"We had a frog-filled fun night with fellow alumni," said Karen. "We're ready for football season and tailgating!"

Jordan Richardson '03, Steve Steward '00 jam in Fort Worth

Jordan Richardson ‘03 spent the summer jamming all over Europe with his band Relentless7. But Richardson is also part of another band — Epic Ruins — that was born and bred right here in Fort Worth, and they are playing in town on Friday, Sept. 17.

Epic Ruins, wildly acclaimed as one of the hottest new local bands, will debut their first album at Lola's this Friday night. Richardson and fellow alum Steve Steward '00 started the band three years ago, riffing off their desire to make a banging, synthy, sexy, spacey, '70's sound. They've even stitched their songs together, like all good albums from that era, with the silvery thread of narrative.

The four band members either live in or are originally from Fort Worth, with Richardson on drums, guitars, and synth, Steve Steward on bass and synth, Sam Anderson on vocals and guitars and Jeff Dazey on sax. The music has such a rich psychedelic groove that one listen hurls you back to your spot on the purple shag with Hendrix and Trower, with a little Parsons Project and Yes thrown in for good measure.

Richardson says Epic Ruins "is maybe something like Pink Floyd if they were from East Texas." But come on out to Lola's and judge for yourself, as Epic Ruins release The Void Mariner and the Mystic Boogie of the Sacred Line to the world. As Richardson warned us via e-mail: "Be there or be in the void. ;)”

Dan '86 and Tracie Michalek along with Cynthia (Banas) '84 and Mike Nack hosted the Chicago area send-off party for the class of 2014 on July 25. Over 40 freshmen, alumni and parents attended.

First-generation Frog

Five-month-old Adam Taylor, son of Derek and Ashley Taylor is decked out in his TCU garb, ready to attend his first football game when TCU faces BYU. But unlike other adorable TCU-attired babies, Adam will be a first-generation Frog, if he parents have their way.

Derek, a University of Texas-Dallas grad, writes: “My wife and I have decided that we will be sending Adam to TCU when he is of age since we are both huge fans of the Horned Frogs. I always wanted to go to TCU because I am Christian and the reputation of your school, but unfortunately the cost was out of my range due to supporting myself through college. But both my wife Ashley (a Stephen F. Austin grad) and I agree that TCU would have been our first choice of colleges.”

Before attending UTD, Derek served in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division. They live in Addison but soon will move to Plano.
