Watching the Frogs ... while on vacation

Rita Kay Stewart Driggers '60 and her grandchildren went to Horseshoe Bay, Texas, for vacation, but they took a break from the lake to watch the Horned Frogs on their laptop as TCU battled Florida State and UCLA at the 2010 College World Series in Omaha, Neb. "We stopped wakeboarding and tubing to watch the games," writes Driggers, who lives in San Antonio.

Sigma Chis rooting on the Frogs in Omaha

Sigma Chis Todd Gordon '90, Mark Livingston '89 and Rich Ledbetter '92 soak up the late evening sun during the TCU-UCLA game at the 2010 College World Series in Omaha, Neb. "We're having a great time in Omaha," writes Ledbetter. "We all went to the Clemson-TCU football game and had a blast."

Ledbetter says the trio took off work for a day and did a 24-hour road trip, including a stop at Famous Dave's.

Gordon is an insurance agent in Denver, while Livingston owns a Ben & Jerry's franchise in St. Louis and Ledbetter runs Castle Contracting in St. Louis.

Sunshine, shades and smiles at CWS

Jace Thompson '08, Kristen Chapman '09, Thomas Pressly '09 and Lauren Nixon '08 took in the TCU-Florida State game at Rosenblatt Stadium at the 2010 College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

"The minute the 'frogpile' happened at the Austin Super Regional, we were calling each other and making plans for Omaha," writes Kristen. "We got off work on Friday and left around 8:00 a.m. and drove up to Omaha. We stayed in Omaha until Sunday and had an absolutely amazing time. The entire trip was excellent, and we're already talking about making a return trip next year.

"I think the best part (aside from winning) was seeing how the city of Omaha welcomed the Frogs with open arms," Lauren shares. "It was impossible to walk anywhere without getting shouts of support or a friendly hello. I hope that Omaha will be a second home for TCU baseball for years to come."

Thompson and Nixon live in Fort Worth. He works at Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, and she works in the Office of Admission for TCU. Chapman lives in Dallas and works for American Airlines. Pressly is in New Orleans attending law school at Loyola.

Wearing TCU purple proudly

Cristie Holloway Jones '00 of Austin wrote in to tell us about her 8-month-old daughter Addie Blair Jones wearing a TCU shirt for the College World Series. "She is a sweet little future Frog!" Jones wrote us. "I am the only Frog in the family, but my husband is a huge frog fan. We wave our TCU flag proudly in front of our home!"

Frogs invade Omaha for 2010 CWS

Mark lives in Austin with his wife and two children and drove up for the CWS. "Having missed the BCS bowl game, I was not going to miss another sporting accomplishment of the same magnitude," he wrote The TCU Magazine. "It also helps having great friends living in Omaha." Mark is a sales controller for Dell, Inc.

Michael is the local. "Being from Omaha and having gone to numerous CWS games over my life, seeing the Frogs and Frog fans in Rosenblatt is awesome!" Michael shared. "This has been an incredible year for TCU and TCU athletics. I wanted to be sure I could share in the excitement." Michael lives in Omaha with his wife and daughter and is vice president and chief operating officer for Cantera Partners, which is involved in economic development in emerging markets.

Heavy metal Frog

Sarah Garrett may not officially be a Frog, but she’s got plenty of Frog family connections.

Her grandfather, Ralph Garrett was a TCU history professor for 30 years, from the 1930s to the 1960s, her great uncle Rollin Garrett was a TCU football letterman in 1916. Her great-grandfather Henry Rufus Garrett even taught at the university when it was in Thorp Spring.

So a few years ago Garrett, owner of The Artful Hand, a home accents shop in Fort Worth, asked Kentucky artist Rich Kolb to add a horned frog to his collection of handcrafted animals sculpted out of recycled materials.

“Now it’s one of his most popular items,” Garrett says of Kolb’s creations, which are part of his Yardbirds collection.

Available in thee different sizes, the small one, pictured, is seven inches long and five inches tall and costs $38.50.
