Frog spirit at the Great Wall of China

Terry Trofholz '03 took his TCU spirit to the Great Wall of China in May with his eMBA class. "Proud to be a Frog in China and get a global perspective on business," Trofholz wrote us. "China is fascinating right now given their recent booming economy, and it was great to see it first-hand with fellow Frogs."

TCU students focused on learning about Chinese business practices, including the opportunities and challenges of doing business in Asia while also developing a process and framework for understanding issues and opportunities related to international business in any geographic context.

"Specifically, I was most interested in the fall/scandal surrounding the powerful former Minister of Commerce,  Bo Xilai," he wrote. "Is China really a good place to start a business given the communist government's control over the Chinese economy, the potential bubble surrounding the Chinese economy, the non-existent protection of intellectual property, the laws forbidding foreigners from learning and practicing Chinese law, and the government's firewall that blocks websites like Facebook and Twitter?"

Trofholz, who hit a TCU record .441 and was a second-team All-American outfielder on the TCU Baseball team in 2002, is on track to earn an MBA in December 2012.

Alum brings a little high fashion to TCU

Dallas-based fashion designer Nicholas Clements-Lindsey '09 has made the Italian Vogue again. But this time, he incorporated a little of TCU.

Lindsey used The Steve and Sarah Smith Entrepreneurs Hall as the set location for a recent shoot. 

Showing off his fashion in elite venues is nothing new to Lindsey.  Nicholas designed for the Golden Globes and Academy Awards. In February and September 2010, he presented his Fall/Winter 2010 and Spring/Summer 2011 collection at New York Fashion Week as the youngest black designer to present at Mercedes Benz. After Nicholas inaugural season at New York Fashion Week, Nicholas became a nationwide interest as an creative styling and design director. Nicholas creative talent as since been placed for publications and companies such as Smashbox Studios, Essence Magazine, Bello Magazine, Flaunt Magazine, Indulge, Examiner, TV Land's She's Got The Look, Neiman Marcus, Daily Candy, Daily Front Row, and Italian Vogue. 

Before that, he presented his Spring/Summer 2010 collection in Los Angeles Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios. Nicholas received praise from numerous publications and networks, including Apparel News and E! Entertainment.

At TCU, Lindsey as a quadruple major, studying communication, marketing, advertising/public relations and arts administration. But it was a trip to Italy during a summer abroad at the Universita di Perugia that set him on course to where he is today.

During his stay, he saw the summer preview of Chanel and it ignited his passion for design. He returned to Texas and began focusing on fashion design, quickly becoming recognized for a classic-chic aesthetic. He was asked to present at the Pin Show, showcasing the best designers of Texas and was recognized as the top student fashion designer.

Former TCU swimmers raising money to stop cancer

Former TCU swimmer and Olympian Walter Soza '96 is raising money to fight cancer through Swim Across America, which is holding its Fort Worth-Dallas area event at Harbor in Rockwall on Lake Hubbard on Saturday. Swim Across America is a non-profit organization that organizes swim events and "is dedicated to raising money and awareness for cancer research, prevention and treatment through swimming - related events. With the help of hundreds of volunteers nationwide and past and current Olympians, SAA is helping to find a cure for cancer through athleticism, community outreach and direct service."

Soza and fellow ex-TCU swimmer Layton Shaffner '97 swam last year in honor of family and friends who have struggled with the disease and have been taken by it. This year, they have created Team TCU made up of Horned Frog participants.

TCU Sports Networking Club takes on Chicago

In April, the TCU Sports Networking Club took a trip to Chicago to learn from some of the Windy City's sports institutions and gain contacts for future employment. On the four-day excursion, the Horned Frog students met with representatives from Gatorade, the Big Ten Network, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, U.S. Soccer Confederation and Ritz Carlton Chicago. 


"The objective of this trip was for our members to gain knowledge about their perspective majors in the sports world and for them to gain contacts for the future if they were to pursue a career in sports," wrote Hunter Segesta, president of the club. "These key interactions will go a long way in finding out if the sports world is the way they want to go in their careers and what areas would best suit them."

The visit to the City of Broad Shoulders is the first for the club, but Segesta hopes it is the start of multiple out-of-state networking opportunities. 


"It was an incredible experience and everyone left with a lot of new knowledge and great contacts for the future," he shared.

Alumna named CEO of The Arthritis Foundation

In May, Susan Carter '79 was named the new Chief Executive Officer of the South Central Region of The Arthritis Foundation, headquartered in Dallas. Carter brings a wealth of experience in the non-profit sector to the foundation, having worked previously at Susan G. Komen for the Cure for nearly 20 years. Carter also has owned and operated her own public relations, marketing and special events firm in Dallas, specializing in non-profits, food, beverage and hospitality industries.

"It is an honor to serve our communities in the South Central Region for a cause in which I strongly believe," Carter said in a foundation news release. "The painful impact of arthritis is unacceptable. I hope to make a positive, lasting impact on their lives."

About 50 million Americans live with the condition, including nearly 4 million Texans.

"I can't tell you how excited I am and how much I am looking forward to working with the Arthritis Foundation to strengthen and grow the South Central Region. As the population of those we serve continues to increase, we must step up our efforts to make a significant impact on the quality of life.  The Arthritis Foundation has a dynamic network in the South Central Region and I feel certain those we engage will embrace the mission and support our life-altering programs and research enabling people to live long and healthy lives," Carter said.

Alumna recognized for higher ed work

Jaime Walker Blanton '02 has been awarded the 2012 Outstanding New Professional of the Year award In May by the American College Personnel Association, a national merit given to those who have done influential work in higher education.


Blanton began working at the University of North Texas in 2009 as a coordinator for parents and family programs in the UNT Division of Student Affairs. She has served as a mentor with the Americans with Disabilities Act Advisory Committee, among other roles. She joined the UNT Division of University Relations, Communications and Marketing as a publications specialist in Integrated Fundraising Communications in April.

In the Division of Student Affairs, her work focused on acclimating parents to their child’s college life and getting them acquainted with services the university had to offer.

“Higher education is a best fit for me because it’s truly transformative,” Blanton said. “Everyone is on a personal journey, and when we do our work well in a university setting, we inspire the journey of these students.”

Blanton’s nomination for the award was based on her work in assessing parents’ activity and opinions on the university. Her roles as a mentor for students with disabilities, a campus adviser for the Gamma Tau chapter of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, We Care We Count committee member and a regular presenter for the Center for Leadership and Service.

“It’s important to be engaged in your campus,” Blanton said. “I’m never afraid to say ‘yes’ to a committee assignment.”
