A proposal outside Amon G. Carter Stadium

Football letterman Adam Lowery '07 of Flowood, Miss., proposed to Betsy Villanueva '11 in front of their legacy bricks outside Amon G. Carter Stadium before the Frogs' home opener against Grambling State.

"I took her to go look for the bricks, and when she found them, I was behind her on a knee," Lowery wrote to us. "The ring was a beautiful asschur cut diamond in a handmade wooden box with a silver horned frog on the top and the words 'Will you marry me' inside."

In addition to their names, their side-by-side bricks also have the inscription "Together forever, Written in stone," on them.

Lowery wore No. 68 and played on the offensive line for the Frogs. Now he works outside of Jackson, Miss., at Lowery Insurance.

Four Frogs among Best Lawyers in America 2013

Earlier this month, four TCU alums of the Fort Worth-based Kelly Hart & Hallman LLP law firm were honored among the Best Lawyers in America 2013, the oldest and most respected peer-review publication in the legal profession.

The recognized attorneys were:

Dee J. Kelly '50, founding partner, administrative/regulatory law, bet-the-company litigation, commercial litigation, corporate law, natural resources law, oil & gas law;
Sharon S. Millians '70 (MA '73), partner, real estate law;
Glenn E. Johnson '73, partner, energy law, natural resources law, oil & gas law;
Todd W. Spake '92, partner, oil & gas law

Additionally, earlier this year, Kelly, Millians and Johnson were selected for inclusion in the 2012 Texas Super Lawyers publication, which is based on peer nominations and independent evaluations of professional achievement and community service. Only 5 percent of attorneys in Texas are named to Super Lawyers. The list will be published in the October 2012 issue of Texas Monthly.

He's a man! He's 40!

Alissa Stephan Potocnik '95 of Lee's Summit, Mo., knew she had to come up with something creative and fun for her the 40th birthday of her husband Jason Potocnik '95.

It'd be even better if it was a surprise.

More than six months in advance, Alissa cooked up a plan with some of Jason's friends in Texas. If they'd be willing to drive up for the TCU-Kansas football game, she'd organize a tailgate scene and enlist their help in celebrating his big Four-Oh birthday.

And that's just what happened. Dustin Ater '95, Scott Wrehe '95, Daryl Horton '95, Peter Couser '95, Christian Ellis '95, Luke Brock '96 and Rick Waters '95 journeyed up to get in on the surprise. Some of the guys showed up at Jason's work place with signs and took him to a Kansas City Royals baseball game the night before the Frogs battled the Jayhawks.

Alissa even ordered up t-shirts for the guys, her children and Jason's parents and siblings with the now-famous Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy phrase, "I'm a man! I'm 40!"

Two alums earn law kudos

In September, one TCU alumnus of the Texas-based Jackson Walker LLP law firm were honored among the Best Lawyers in America 2013, the oldest and most respected peer-review publication in the legal profession.  

W. Gary Fowler '81, partner in the firm's Dallas office, was recognized for his work in the areas of labor  and employment law.

Joel Heydenburk '00, partner in the firm's Fort Worth office and specialist in the areas of real estate and finance transactions, was selected as a 2012 Rising Star by Thomson Reuters. The award is given to attorneys who are 40 years of age or younger and have practiced 10 or fewer years. It is based on a two-part system that determines the top 2.5 percent of the state’s up-and-coming lawyers.

Jackson Walker LLP has more than 340 attorneys in Fort Worth, Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Angelo, San Antonio and Texarkana.

Frog Fountain groom's cake

Justine Shay '07 and David Jergovic '07 of Dallas were married in May and shared this photo of a Frog Fountain-themed groom's cake from the wedding. "The tower was built by David's mom, uncle and sister," they wrote. The flutes hold cupcakes, but the base is not edible.

"The tower took, off and on, about 4 weeks to build," Justine wrote us. "Dave's uncle constructed the tower, and his mom and sister painted the tower and added the artistic flare. The tower is made out of a combination of wood, plastic, and steel."

The cake is still a keeper, Justin told us.

"Currently, the tower is assembled in our guest bedroom. We have talked about renting it to bakeries in the DFW area, or loaning it to fellow TCU grads," she wrote.

Alum sings at July 4 event in Atlanta on statewide TV

Bronaugh Bridges '76, 7th District Assistant Staff Officerin the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and his wife Shellenah sang "God Bless America" during a Georgia Salutes America program before a crowd of 30,000 at Centennial Park in Atlanta on July 4. 

The couple was a part of a Team U.S. Coast Guard tribute sponsored by Atlanta's ABC affiliate, which carried the event live, and the Georgia Lottery.

Alumna directs show at Fashion Week in NYC

This week, fashion merchandising graduate and El Salvador native Carolina Maties-Alvarez '10 directed a fashion show at Lincoln Center during New York City's famed Fashion Week for the design house of Angel Sanchez. " This is a very big deal for Carolina," said Terry Turrentine Irby '82, who serves on the Chancellor's Advisory Council and has served as Maties-Alvarez's Texas "mom." 

Maties-Alvarez also appeared (above on the far right in the blue dress) in the September issue of the Spanish Edition of People. She was photographed at a fashion awards event in New York City. "It is good to see a young fellow frog get noticed and do well," Irby said.

Frog on a Harley

Barb Faraca '95 from Spokane, Wash., sent us this photo of her Harley-Davidson motorcycle with a gold horned frog adornment. "I found a wonderful artist in Albuquerque, N.M., who makes beautiful hood ornaments," she wrote us.
